expert advice |
"Trust the expertise of the facility staff if you desire a relaxing, stress-free reception that eveyrone will enjoy," advises Sharon Glagola of Ridge Manor Party Center. "They have the expertise to handle any challenge. Knowing you are in good hands will allow you to relax, smile laugh, socialize, eat, dance, celebrate, and have fun! If you do, your guests will follow suit."
"Ask about referrals, because the people at the hall can suggest recommendations for other services. If you can use the vendors that the hall works with most often, it can be easier on everybody because then they don't have to get messages to each other through the bride," suggests Judd Limbach of Rustic Hills Country Club.
"More brides are choosing a formal look for their reception celebration, including special linens and elegant ice sculptures," noted Mary Jane Lucak of St. Michaels Woodside. "These touches add an elegant flair to the celebration as well."
"The first goal of a reception sites staff should be to provide the guests with the most spectacular reception they have ever attended," Jim Rosenberger of Chagrin Valley Athletic Club exclaims. "The staff should also be available from the early planning stages to the final toast."
"Booking your reception at a venue with hotel rooms has many advantages for both the couple and their guests. Your guests will get discounted room rates and will not have to go far at the end of the night. You will not have to worry about your guests making it safely home or about providing transportation. With everyone under one roof there is more time for gathering before the wedding or even the next day at breakfast." Katie Butler Executive Meeting & Wedding Manager Embassy Suites - Rockside
"This may be surprising to people, but brides tend to have a better turnout for Friday evening receptions. People are already dressed up, and they just come right from work," says Pamela Parker of Country Lakes Party Center.
The Sales Manager and Wedding Coordinator for the Sheraton Suites Akron/Cuyahoga Falls notes that couples are really trying to connect with their guests (especially out-of-towners) and are planning a weekend full of activities and get-togethers. Friday night weddings, Saturday family events and Sunday brunches are becoming very popular.

"To save time when planning your reception, take into account a location that will provide you with the most services within one location," adds Michelle Adelman of Executive Caterers. "Look for a facility that can not only provide you with quality food and exceptional service, but one that can offer you an incredible ambiance, (both indoors and out), decoration and flower service, plus AV capabilities if you're planning to
showcase a wedding video. When you take all these factors into consideration, you'll be surprised how much you can get done and still have time to relax BEFORE the wedding day."
Catering Sales Manager, Kimberly Patrone, from The Lodge at Geneva on-the-Lake recommends brunch receptions. "Not only does it save money on your reception but it gives the bride and groom more time to spend with each other on their wedding day after the brunch is over as opposed to evening receptions that tend to run late."
"A good banquet facility and staff will put themselves in 'your shoes' and treat your reception as if it were their very own. How will they maximize your budget to give you everything you want? A hall should accommodate the bride in every way that they can,” says Sean Brennan of Brennan's Catering & Banquet Center.
"There are many ways to save money when planning your wedding-just keep an open mind. Being flexible with your wedding date is a great way to save money because many venues and vendors will provide discounts for Friday and Sunday wedding receptions...simply because these days are not in high demand! Also save money by combining certain aspects of your decorations...For example, use the guest table centerpiece as a favor and an additional dessert by using different shaped containers and filling them with
colorful candies or chocolates. It adds a sense of style and color to your guest table, as well as pleasing your sweet tooth." Brenda Schiralli, Catering Sales Manager, The Bertram Inn & Conference Center
"Decide if you want your reception to be trendy, traditional, romantic or fun. Once you make that decision, work with the reception venue on choosing lighting, décor and linens that will set the mood you are looking for. Many couples will utilize draping and up-lighting to create a trendy look. If you are trying to set a romantic mood for your guests, consider candlelight with soft colors and fabrics." Embassy Suites - Beachwood
When setting your reception time, always ask the hall if guests happen to show up early, will the hall be accommodating or will your guests have to wait outside the room? The same goes for the end of the reception, if the reception ends at a specific time, does that mean your guests, band/DJ have to be out at that time or will they have a little extra time to pack up? Anthony from La-Vera Party Center.
Michelle Dearlove, Banquet Manager for Medina Country Club suggests a way to stay with your budget is to eliminate a full bar. "A wedding reception does not have to have liquor to make it memorable. Many receptions have a soft bar, consisting of beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages, instead of offering liquor."
Micki Kennedy of The City Club of Cleveland suggests Lighting, candles, floral arrangements and good music containing a balance of all generations of music to sett the ambiance and overall mood of your wedding.
Food quality and presentation are extremely important aspects of any wedding. Pairing delicious food with a wonderful atmosphere can make an unforgettable reception. Adding a little extra, like chair covers, table runners, or fresh flowers will set the mood and let your guests relax in a beautiful setting. Start and finish your reception with something for your guests to remember. Welcome them with appetizers as they arrive and let them enjoy something sweet and delectable before they leave. You want your
guests to enjoy every moment, from beginning to end."
Joe Verba, Catering By Verba's
"Most importantly," recommends Laura Swarts of Hawthorne Valley Country Club, "experience caring professionals who realize this is one of the most important days of your life. We personalize your special occasion focusing our attention to every detail".
According to Brenda Schiralli of the Hilton Garden Inn of Mayfield Village, "Each couple is different and has different priorities on what’s important to them. If it’s the food, they may add an additional food course such as an appetizer course or an intermezzo. Another way to upgrade the food is adding a dessert station or a late night snack station."
